The Personalization Guide
At Third Stitch, personalization is where the fun begins. A name, a monogram, a favorite phrase… it’s the little detail that turns something cute into something theirs.
Whether you're stitching for a baby, a gift, a weekend trip, or everyday organization, we’ve created a simple guide to help you choose the style that fits best.
Because around here, every stitch should feel special.
The Classic Monogram
Three letters, timeless style.
The traditional monogram is a classic for a reason. It features three initials with the last name in the center and slightly larger, creating that balanced, signature look.
Traditional order:
First • Last • Middle
For couples, the traditional monogram usually places the woman’s first initial on the left, the shared last name in the center, and the man’s first initial on the right.
The Straight Monogram
Clean, modern, and easy to read.
In a straight monogram, the initials appear in a simple line with no larger center letter.
Order:
First • Middle • Last
This style has a slightly more modern look and can feel a bit more masculine, which is why it has traditionally been used for men’s monograms. Great for everyday pieces like bags, hats, and travel items where a clean, classic look works best.
Two-Letter Monograms
Two-letter monograms, often called duograms or ciphers, offer a simple and stylish way to personalize a piece. This style typically features two initials in a balanced design and is a lovely option when you want something subtle but still special.
They are often used for:
• Couples’ initials
• Siblings or shared items
• First and last initials
Duograms feel timeless and refined while keeping the personalization clean and understated.
A Single Initial
Understated and classic.
A single initial is one of the most versatile and timeless ways to personalize a piece. Most often, this initial represents the last name, but it can also be a first name depending on the look you prefer. Since there’s only one letter, this style allows you to lean into more ornate or decorative fonts that might feel too busy in a full monogram.
It’s a favorite for:
• Guest towels
• Travel bags
• Everyday accessories
Sometimes the simplest option is the most elegant.
Full Names or Words
Playful, personal, and uniquely yours.
Names, nicknames, and fun phrases are some of our favorite things to stitch. From baby gifts to organization bags to custom orders, this option gives you the most freedom to create something one-of-a-kind.
A few ideas we love:
• First names
• Sweet nicknames
• Funny phrases
• Kids’ favorite things
This is where personalization really becomes your story.
